In 2019, in a moment of weakness, I let my husband, Mike, talk me into riding my bike across the country with him. Just the two of us, with all of our gear. On our bicycles-- not motorcycles, not e-bikes. For over 3,000 miles.

Alright then. I told Mike I wanted to take a southern route because I had never been to much of the Deep South or the Southwest. I was curious about the mindset there, with immigration, guns, and race being such controversial issues throughout the U.S.

​

Over the next 71 days we had the adventure of a lifetime. The endless hills, severe winds, and dripping heat had me questioning my sanity, but the beauty of the sea, the mountain vistas, and the desert sunsets all soothed my soul. 

​

We saw poverty and prisons along with wealth and luxury. We encountered history’s heroes and its scoundrels. We learned about crawdads and snakes, pecan farming and astrophysics, gold mines, migrants, and so much more. And we met welcoming strangers at every turn.
